The story of this dish
Tres leches means "three milks" in Spanish, after the condensed milk, evaporated milk and cream the cake is soaked in. Today it is a birthday and celebration favorite across Mexico, Central America, the Caribbean and much of South America.
Its exact birthplace is uncertain; Nicaragua and Mexico are the most often cited contenders. Soaking cakes in syrup or liqueur is an old European idea, and it is commonly said that in Latin America it met the canned milks that spread in the 20th century, with recipes printed on can labels helping the cake travel. In Turkey and the Balkans a caramel-topped relative is popular under the name trileçe.
