The story of this dish
The Thai name khao niao mamuang means simply "sticky rice mango". Sticky rice is the everyday staple of northern and northeastern Thailand and neighboring Laos, where it is rolled into balls by hand and eaten with other dishes.
The dessert is a fixture of street stalls during mango season in spring and early summer. The coconut sauce is deliberately both sweet and noticeably salty, a contrast that balances the mango's sweetness in true Thai fashion.
