The story of this dish
Chicken soup belongs to no single country; it is a home remedy known almost everywhere. In Turkey it is the first thing made for someone who is ill, a new mother or anyone worn out, and people often call it "like medicine".
The word şehriye, the fine vermicelli in the soup, comes from an Arabic root meaning "hair", a nod to its thin strands. Şehriyeli tavuk suyu is one of the simplest and best-loved soups of Turkish home kitchens and traditional esnaf restaurants.
