The story of this dish
In Turkey, şakşuka doesn't mean an egg dish but a cold meze of fried eggplant and peppers dressed in tomato sauce. The similarly named shakshuka of North Africa and the Middle East is a breakfast dish of eggs poached in tomato sauce; the names are close but the dishes are quite different, and the word's origin is not known for certain.
Turkish-style şakşuka is one of the best-loved cold mezes at meyhane and home tables. In some regions zucchini and potatoes join the eggplant, and the whole dish is topped with garlic yogurt.
