The story of this dish
Oyakodon means "parent-and-child bowl" in Japanese, a gentle joke about chicken and egg meeting in the same dish. "Don" is short for donburi, the family of meals served over a bowl of rice.
According to a popular story, it was born in the late 19th century at a long-established chicken restaurant in Tokyo, where the leftover sauce from chicken hot pots was bound with egg and poured over rice, though its exact origin is debated. Today it is a beloved home dish and a quick, inexpensive lunch all over Japan.
