The story of this dish
Menemen is said to take its name from the town of Menemen near İzmir, though its exact origin is uncertain and similar pepper, tomato and egg dishes are made all over Anatolia under different names.
It is also the subject of Turkey's most passionate food debate: onion or no onion? Some insist the sweetness of onion is essential, others say real menemen is only peppers, tomatoes and eggs. Everyone agrees, however, that it must be eaten hot from the pan with plenty of bread.
