The story of this dish
Maultaschen are the emblem of Swabia in south-western Germany and carry protected geographical status in the European Union as "Schwäbische Maultaschen". The best-known legend says monks at Maulbronn Abbey, forbidden to eat meat during Lent, minced it with spinach and hid it inside pasta, which is why the dish is jokingly called "Herrgottsbscheißerle", roughly "little cheats on the Lord God".
