The story of this dish
Bratkartoffeln, simply "fried potatoes", is a humble dish known all over Germany, from home kitchens to pubs. It is usually made with potatoes boiled the day before, which makes it a delicious way to use up leftovers.
It is traditionally fried with bacon (Speck) and lard; here we use beef pastırma or smoked turkey instead. Bratkartoffeln are typically served with fried eggs, Frikadellen, schnitzel or fish, and often accompany Hamburg's famous sailors' dish, Labskaus.
