The story of this dish
Keşkül takes its name from dervish culture. The Persian-derived word keşkül refers to the bowl, often made from a coconut shell, that wandering dervishes carried to collect alms. The dessert's full name, keşkül-ü fukara, means "the bowl of the poor", and the coconut still sprinkled on top is seen as a nod to that origin.
Keşkül belongs to the family of Ottoman almond and milk puddings and is a classic in the display cases of Turkish pudding shops. Its generous amount of almonds gives it a richer, more fragrant taste than a plain milk pudding.
