The story of this dish
İmam bayıldı means "the imam fainted", and it is one of the best-known Turkish olive oil dishes. Several stories explain the name: in one, an imam tasted it and swooned with delight; in another, he fainted when he learned how much costly olive oil had gone into it. No one knows which is true, but both capture the dish rather well.
It grew out of the Ottoman love of eggplant and the olive oil cooking tradition of the Aegean and Istanbul. Unlike its meaty cousin karnıyarık, it contains no meat and is eaten at room temperature or cold.
