The story of this dish
Frikadellen are bread-bound flat meat patties found everywhere in Germany, from butcher's counters to picnic baskets. The origin of the name isn't certain, but it is often linked to words for fried dishes such as the French "fricandeau" or the Italian "frittatella".
The name changes by region: Buletten in Berlin, Fleischpflanzerl in Bavaria and Fleischküchle in parts of the southwest. Denmark has a very similar dish, frikadeller, considered one of its national favorites. In Germany they are traditionally made with half pork and half beef; this version uses all beef or a beef and lamb mix.
