The story of this dish
Ezogelin soup is named after Ezo the bride (gelin means bride), said to have come from the village of Dokuzyol near Gaziantep. According to the popular story, Ezo lived in the early 20th century and was famous for her beauty but unhappy in marriage; she is said to have created this soup to win over her mother-in-law in her new home far away. The details vary with the teller, but her name made its way into folk songs and films.
Today ezogelin is one of the most loved soups in restaurants and homes across Turkey. Cheap, nourishing and easy, it is a winter staple.
