The story of this dish
Çoban salatası means "shepherd's salad", usually explained by its simple ingredients that a shepherd could carry into the fields and chop with a pocket knife, though the true origin of the name is unknown. Tomatoes and peppers came from the Americas and took time to spread through the Ottoman lands, so the salad in its current form is thought to be relatively recent.
Today it is the most common salad in Turkey, served everywhere from kebab houses to family tables. It brings freshness alongside grilled meats, bean stew and pilaf.
