Seed Stitch Scarf

Tap a section when you finish it.

1. 1Cast onCast on 41 sts onto 5.5 mm needles. The stitch count must be odd so that every row of seed stitch is the same. Clip a marker to the fabric at the start of the first row, on the cast-on tail side, to mark the right side. (41 sts)
2. 2Seed stitch rowEvery row: *k1, p1* 20 times, k1. (41 sts) The row always begins and ends with a knit stitch. From Row 2 on, check that you are purling the stitches that look like knits and knitting the ones that look like purls; that creates the bumpy texture.
3. 3BodyKeep repeating the same row. Bring the yarn forward before each purl and back before each knit. Check your stitch count every 10 cm. Work until the scarf measures about 150 cm (about 420 rows).
4. 4Fixing mistakesIf you see a smooth vertical stripe in the texture, you worked a row as the stitches appeared. Unpick the stitches one by one back to that row. To stay on track, remember each row starts with a knit and then a purl.
5. 5Bind offBind off in pattern so the seed stitch isn't interrupted: work each stitch as it would be worked on that row (*k1, p1*, ending k1) and pass the previous stitch over. Keep the bind-off loose so the edge stays as wide as the cast-on edge.
6. 6FinishingWeave in the ends along the side edges. Dampen the scarf, lay it flat, smooth the edges by hand and let it dry. Seed stitch doesn't curl, so there's no need to pin it.
