1. 1Cast onUsing the long-tail method, cast on 48 sts onto a 4.5 mm needle. This is 1 edge stitch + 46 rib stitches + 1 edge stitch; 46 sts give a 2x2 rib that starts and ends with k2. (48 sts)
2. 2Rib rowsRow 1 (RS): sl1 purlwise with yarn in front, bring yarn to back, k2, *p2, k2* 11 times, k1. (48 sts) Row 2 (WS): sl1 purlwise with yarn in front, p2, *k2, p2* 11 times, k1. (48 sts) In short: after the edge stitches, work each stitch as it appears; knit the knits and purl the purls.
3. 3BodyKeep repeating Rows 1 and 2. Bring the yarn forward between the needles before a purl and back before a knit; otherwise you'll create extra stitches. Check your stitch count every 20 rows. Work until the scarf measures about 170 cm unstretched (about 475 rows), ending with a Row 2.
4. 4Changing ballsJoin each new ball at the beginning of a row and leave 15 cm tails of both yarns. You'll weave them into the edge stitches later. Dark yarns are hard to read, so knit in daylight or under a good lamp.
5. 5Bind off in patternWith the RS facing, bind off in pattern: work each stitch as it appears (knit the knits, purl the purls) and pass the previous stitch on the right needle over it. Binding off in pattern keeps the rib elastic and makes it match the cast-on edge. Pull the yarn through the last stitch.
6. 6FinishingWeave in the ends at least 5 cm through the edge stitches. Soak the scarf in lukewarm water for 15 minutes, roll it in a towel to remove water and dry it flat without stretching. Don't pin the rib open flat; leaving it relaxed keeps the scarf thick and squishy.
