Crochet Kids' Earflap Hat

Instructions

Tap a section when you finish it.

1. 1CrownEvery round starts with ch 1 (doesn't count) and is joined with a sl st to the first sc. Round 1: 6 sc in a magic ring. (6) Round 2: inc in each st. (12) Round 3: *1 sc, inc* 6 times. (18) Round 4: *2 sc, inc*. (24) Round 5: *3 sc, inc*. (30) Round 6: *4 sc, inc*. (36) Round 7: *5 sc, inc*. (42) Round 8: *6 sc, inc*. (48) Round 9: *7 sc, inc*. (54) Round 10: *8 sc, inc*. (60)
2. 2BodyRounds 11-24: ch 1, sc in each st, sl st to first sc. (60) The join is at the centre back. After Round 24, fasten off.
3. 3Earflap placementCounting from the start of the round (centre back): sts 1-7 back, sts 8-19 left earflap, sts 20-41 front (forehead), sts 42-53 right earflap, sts 54-60 back. Mark the first and last stitch of each earflap. Try the hat on the child and check the earflaps sit over the ears.
4. 4EarflapsJoin the yarn in st 8. Row 1: 12 sc. Turn. (12) Row 2: ch 1, 12 sc. (12) Row 3: ch 1, sc2tog, 8 sc, sc2tog. (10) Row 4: ch 1, 10 sc. (10) Row 5: ch 1, sc2tog, 6 sc, sc2tog. (8) Row 6: ch 1, 8 sc. (8) Row 7: ch 1, sc2tog, 4 sc, sc2tog. (6) Row 8: ch 1, sc2tog, 2 sc, sc2tog. (4) Row 9: ch 1, sc2tog twice. (2) Fasten off. Work the second earflap the same way, starting in st 42.
5. 5Edging roundWith the contrast (or main) colour, start at the centre back. Work 1 sc in each st along the lower edge of the hat; along the earflap sides work 1 sc in each row end, with 3 sc at the tip of each earflap. Continue all the way around and join with a sl st to the first sc.
6. 6Braided tiesFor each earflap cut 9 lengths of yarn, each 60 cm. Pull them through a stitch at the earflap tip at their midpoint and fold them in half (18 ends). Divide into three groups of 6, braid for 15 cm, tie tightly with a piece of yarn and trim the ends to 3 cm.
7. 7Pom-pom and finishingMake a 6 cm pom-pom and sew it securely to the top. Weave in all ends on the inside. Dampen the hat lightly and dry it over a bowl with the earflaps hanging down.
