Crochet Kids' Hat and Scarf Set

1. 1Hat: crownWith colour A. Every round starts with ch 2 (doesn't count) and is joined with a sl st to the first dc. Round 1: 12 dc in a magic ring. (12) Round 2: inc in each st. (24) Round 3: *1 dc, inc* 12 times. (36) Round 4: *2 dc, inc* 12 times. (48) Round 5: *3 dc, inc* 12 times. (60)
2. 2Hat: bodyRounds 6-10: ch 2, dc in each st, sl st to first dc. (60) Adjust these rounds to the child: add 1 round for ages 6 and up. Work the final pull-through of Round 10 with colour B and cut A.
3. 3Hat: ribbed brimWith colour B. Rounds 11-14: ch 2 (doesn't count), *1 FPdc, 1 BPdc* 30 times, sl st to first FPdc. (60) Work each post stitch around the same type of stitch in the round below. Fasten off and weave in the ends.
4. 4Hat: pom-pomMake a full 7 cm pom-pom in colour B, tie the middle tightly and trim it into shape. Pass the tie through the hole at the top of the hat and knot it securely inside. For small children, stitch the pom-pom on several times so it can't be pulled off.
5. 5ScarfWith colour B, ch 19. Row 1: hdc in 3rd ch from hook and in each remaining ch. Turn. (17) Following rows: ch 2 (doesn't count), hdc in each st. Turn. (17) Colour sequence: Rows 1-6 B, Rows 7-10 A, Rows 11-12 B, Rows 13-88 A, Rows 89-90 B, Rows 91-94 A, Rows 95-100 B. Change colour on the last pull-through of the row.
6. 6Scarf: tasselsCut 40 pieces of colour B, each 20 cm long. Fold 4 pieces in half and pull them through a stitch on the short edge with the hook to make a tassel; attach 5 tassels evenly to each end. Trim them to 8 cm.
7. 7FinishingWeave the colour-change tails on the scarf into rows of the same colour. Dampen the hat and scarf lightly and dry them flat. Drying the hat over a bowl helps it keep its shape.
