Eyelet Triangle Shawl

1. 1BeginningCast on 7 sts onto the circular needle; the shawl is worked flat, the cable just holds the many stitches. Row 1 (RS): k2, yo, k1, yo, pm, k1 (CS), pm, yo, k1, yo, k2. (11 sts) Row 2 (WS): k2, purl to last 2 sts, k2. (11 sts) The shawl has 2 garter edge sts at each side, the CS in the middle and a half section on each side of it; each half now has 3 sts.
2. 2Basic rowsIncrease row (RS): k2, yo, knit to marker, yo, sm, k1, sm, yo, knit to last 2 sts, yo, k2. (4 sts increased.) WS row: k2, purl to last 2 sts, k2. Eyelet row (RS): k2, yo, k1, *yo, k2tog* to marker, yo, sm, k1, sm, yo, *ssk, yo* to last 3 sts, k1, yo, k2. (4 sts increased.) Each half always has an odd number of stitches, so the pattern fits exactly.
3. 3Body (12-row block)Rows 1, 3, 5, 7 and 9: increase row. Row 11: eyelet row. Even rows 2-12: WS row. Work this 12-row block 14 times in total. Each block adds 24 sts: you should have 35 sts after the first block and 347 sts after the 14th.
4. 4Garter borderRS rows: increase row. WS rows: knit all sts. Repeat these two rows 6 times (12 rows). You should have 371 sts when the border is complete. The garter border keeps the lower edges from curling.
5. 5Stretchy bind-offWith the RS facing, work a very stretchy bind-off: k2, slip both back to the left needle and knit them together through the back loops; *k1, slip the two sts on the right needle back to the left needle and knit them together through the back loops* until one stitch remains. This bind-off lets the edge open fully when blocked. Pull the yarn through the last stitch.
6. 6Finishing and blockingWeave in the ends but don't trim them before blocking. Soak the shawl in lukewarm water for 20 minutes, roll it in a towel and lay it on the mats. Pin the neck edge in a straight line first, then stretch the centre spine downward and pin; open the lower edges into straight lines with a pin every 5 cm. Remove the pins when completely dry and trim the tails.
