The story of this dish
Horiatiki means "of the village" in Greek, and outside Greece it is simply called Greek salad. Its classic form is generally thought to have settled in the 20th century, as the taverna became a fixture of Greek life, though its exact origins are not documented.
Its star, feta, is a protected designation of origin cheese in the European Union, traditionally made from sheep's milk or a mix of sheep's and goat's milk. The rules of horiatiki are simple: no lettuce, plenty of olive oil, and the feta sits on top in one piece.
