The story of this dish
The name tzatziki is generally thought to come from the Turkish cacık, and the trio of yogurt, cucumber and garlic is shared by many cuisines of the former Ottoman world. Unlike Turkish cacık, which is often thinned with water and almost sipped like a cold soup, Greek tzatziki is made thick as a dip.
Today it is the essential partner of gyros and souvlaki and a fixture of every meze table.
