The story of this dish
Loukoumades are the Greek version of Turkish lokma; the name came through Turkish from an Arabic word meaning "a mouthful". Frying dough balls and pairing them with sweet syrup is a very old tradition across the eastern Mediterranean and the Middle East, living on under many names.
According to a popular story, honey-coated fried dough balls were handed out as prizes in ancient Greece and are the distant ancestors of loukoumades, though the connection is uncertain. Today loukoumades are a fixture of Greek street stalls and dedicated loukoumades shops, traditionally served with honey, cinnamon and walnuts.
