The story of this dish
Mixing ground meat with bread and egg and baking it as a loaf is an old idea in Europe, with relatives in German, Dutch and Scandinavian cooking. In America, meatloaf recipes began appearing in cookbooks in the late 19th century.
Meatloaf found real fame during the Great Depression of the 1930s as a thrifty way to stretch a little meat with bread and other ingredients to feed a family. The ketchup glaze became a fixture over time. American meatloaf is often made with a mix of beef and pork; this version uses beef only.
