The story of this dish
Kimbap takes its name from "gim" (dried seaweed) and "bap" (cooked rice). Its origins are debated: some point to long-standing Korean traditions of wrapping rice in seaweed, while others argue that today's rolled form spread along with Japanese norimaki during the colonial period (1910-1945).
