The story of this dish
Hotteok is thought to have arrived in Korea in the late 19th century with Chinese merchants and immigrants who settled there. The "ho" in its name is widely believed to come from a word historically used for foreigners, especially those from China. Adapted over time to Korean tastes, it became one of the country's most familiar street snacks.
Hotteok is especially popular on cold winter days, sold steaming hot from street stalls in paper cups or napkins. There are regional twists too, such as Busan's ssiat hotteok stuffed with seeds and nuts, as well as savoury versions filled with vegetables and glass noodles.
