The story of this dish
The chocolate chip cookie was created in the 1930s by Ruth Wakefield, who ran the Toll House Inn in Massachusetts. She added chopped semi-sweet chocolate to a buttery cookie dough; the recipe quickly became a hit and later spread nationwide when it was printed on a chocolate maker's packaging.
A popular story says the cookie was an accident, with the chocolate expected to melt but staying in pieces, though other accounts say Wakefield developed it deliberately. Today it is regarded as one of America's best-loved homemade treats.
