Crochet Crossbody Bag with Flap

Instructions

Tap a section when you finish it.

1. 1FoundationCh 37. Row 1: sc in the 2nd chain from the hook, dc in the next chain, *sc 1, dc 1* to the end (36 sts; the row ends with a dc).
2. 2Textured patternRow 2 and following: ch 1 (does not count), turn, *sc in the dc of the previous row, dc in the sc* to the end (36). Because dc is worked over sc and sc over dc, small, dense bumps form on the surface and the bag fabric is sturdy. Work 44 rows in total (about 31 cm); the first 22 rows will be the front and the next 22 rows the back.
3. 3FlapWork 11 more rows in pattern. Then, to round the corners, work 3 more rows, working sc2tog over the first two and the last two stitches of each row and keeping the pattern correct in between: 34, 32, 30 sts. The flap is 14 rows in total (about 10 cm). Do not cut the yarn.
4. 4Edging and button loopWork a row of sc around the flap and along the side edges, 1 sc in the end of each row; when you reach the exact center of the lower edge of the flap, ch 8 and sl st into the same stitch to make the button loop. Cut the yarn.
5. 5Folding and side seamsFold the first 22 rows up over the next 22 rows; the foundation chain becomes the top edge of the front. Join yarn at a bottom corner and work along the side edge through the row ends of both layers, 1 sc per row (22 sc). Join the other side the same way. This seam, worked on the outside, gives the bag a neat frame.
6. 6StrapCh 181. Sc in the 2nd chain from the hook and in each remaining chain (180). Ch 1, turn, sc 180. Sew the ends of the strap firmly to the top of each side seam, overlapping 3 cm on the inside.
7. 7FinishingClose the flap, mark where the button loop falls and sew the button onto the front; for a magnetic snap, sew one half inside the flap and the other onto the front. Weave in the ends. If you like, sew a fabric pouch and hand-tack it inside the bag as a lining; it keeps the cotton from stretching.
