Crochet Hexagon Blanket

1. 1Hexagon: rounds 1 and 2With A, make a magic ring. Round 1: Ch 3 (counts as 1 dc), 1 dc, ch 2, *2 dc, ch 2* 5 times; join with sl st to top of ch-3 (12 dc, 6 corners; 2 dc per side). Round 2: Sl st into next dc and into the corner sp. Ch 3, (ch 2, 1 dc) in same sp; *1 dc in each of next 2 dc, (1 dc, ch 2, 1 dc) in corner sp* 5 times, 1 dc in each of next 2 dc, join with sl st (24 dc; 4 dc per side).
2. 2Hexagon: rounds 3-9Work every round by the same rule: (1 dc, ch 2, 1 dc) in each corner sp and 1 dc in each dc between corners. Each round every side grows by 2 dc. Round 3 A: 36 dc. Rounds 4-6 B: 48, 60, 72 dc. Rounds 7-8 C: 84, 96 dc. Round 9 D: 108 dc (18 dc per side). Join new colors in a corner sp. Make 44 full hexagons; you can swap A, B and C around for different combinations, but always work round 9 in D.
3. 3Half hexagonMake 8 half hexagons to straighten the side edges; they are worked in rows, turning each row. Row 1: Into a magic ring work ch 3, 1 dc, ch 2, 2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc (3 sides of 2 dc each). Turn. Rows 2-9: Ch 3 (counts as 1 dc), 1 dc in same st; 1 dc in each dc to corner; (1 dc, ch 2, 1 dc) in each corner sp; 1 dc in each dc to last st; 2 dc in top of turning ch of previous row. Turn. Each row adds 2 dc to every side; row 9 has 18 dc per side (54 dc). Use colors in the same order as the full hexagons, with row 9 in D.
4. 4LayoutArrange the hexagons in horizontal rows with points facing up and down. Rows 1, 3, 5 and 7 have 6 full hexagons; rows 2, 4, 6 and 8 have 5 full hexagons with a half hexagon at each end. The short rows shift in by half a hexagon, so the motifs nest like a honeycomb and the side edges become straight.
5. 5JoiningWith D, hold two motifs WS together and join with sc from corner sp to corner sp, working through the outer loops only of both edges (18 sc along the side plus 1 sc in each corner sp). First join each horizontal row, then join the rows to each other along the zigzag line. The straight edge of each half hexagon forms the side edge of the blanket.
6. 6BorderWork 3 rounds with D around the edge. Round 1: 1 sc in each st; 3 sc in each outward point along the top and bottom; at each inward corner where two motifs meet, sc2tog over the last st of one motif and the first st of the next; along the straight half-hexagon edges, 2 sc in each row end. Round 2: Same rule, with 3 sc in the center sc of each point and sc2tog at inner corners. Round 3: 1 sc in each st and join.
7. 7FinishingWeave all ends into the joining seams and the border. Dampen the blanket, lay it flat and straighten the hexagon edges as it dries.
