Checkerboard Knit Blanket

Instructions

Tap a section when you finish it.

1. 1Cast onCast on 130 sts onto the 6 mm circular needle. If you like, place a marker after the 5th st and before the last 5 sts to separate the border stitches (130 sts).
2. 2Bottom garter borderRows 1-8: Knit all sts. This border keeps the blanket from curling (130 sts).
3. 3Block row AFor 14 rows, work every row (RS and WS alike): k5, *k10, p10* 6 times, k5. Because you work the same sequence on WS rows, blocks that look knit on the RS stay knit and purl blocks stay purl. After 14 rows the first row of blocks is complete (130 sts).
4. 4Block row BFor the next 14 rows, work every row: k5, *p10, k10* 6 times, k5. Purl blocks now sit above knit blocks and knit blocks above purl blocks, creating the checkerboard (130 sts).
5. 5Completing the bodyKeep alternating block rows A and B: A, B, A, B... for 15 block rows in total; the first and last block rows are A (8 A, 7 B; 210 rows).
6. 6Top garter border and bind offKnit all sts for 8 rows. On the next row bind off loosely knitwise. You should have worked 226 rows in total.
7. 7FinishingWeave in the ends inside the garter borders. Soak the blanket in lukewarm water, squeeze out, lay flat and gently square up the blocks as it dries.
