Chunky Knit Sofa Throw

1. 1Cast onCast on 80 sts onto the 12 mm circular needle. You will use it like straight needles and turn the work at the end of every row. Keep the cast-on loose; with bulky yarn a loose edge prevents puckering (80 sts).
2. 2Bottom garter borderRows 1-6: Knit all sts. Six rows of garter make three clear ridges along the bottom edge and keep it from curling (80 sts).
3. 3Ribbed bodyRS row: k3, *k2, p2* 18 times, k2, k3. WS row: k3, *p2, k2* 18 times, p2, k3. Repeat these two rows for 131 rows in total. The 3 sts at each side are always knitted, so a garter edge forms by itself (80 sts).
4. 4Joining a new ballWhen a ball runs out, always join the new one at the beginning of a row so knots and tails stay at the edge where they are easy to hide. Leave both tails about 15 cm long.
5. 5Top garter borderAfter the body, knit all sts for 6 more rows. You should have 143 rows in total; once the throw measures about 130 cm you can finish (80 sts).
6. 6Bind offOn the next row bind off loosely knitwise. If needed, use a needle one size larger so the bind-off edge is not narrower than the cast-on edge.
7. 7FinishingWeave in the ends through the garter edges with the yarn needle and trim. Lay the throw flat and ease it into shape by hand; wet blocking is not needed, so the rib keeps its natural stretch.
