Seed Stitch Cropped Cardigan

1. 1Seed stitch (odd number of sts)Every row: *k1, p1*, end k1. Each stitch that looked like a knit on the previous row is purled and each purl is knitted; with an odd stitch count this happens automatically. The ribbing is also worked on an odd number of sts: RS k1, *p1, k1*; WS p1, *k1, p1*.
2. 2BackWith 3.5 mm needles cast on 93 (103, 113, 123) sts and work rib for 4 cm. Change to 4 mm and begin seed stitch. When the piece measures 24 (25, 26, 27) cm, place an armhole marker at each edge. At 44 (46, 48, 50) cm bind off all sts. Shoulders: 31 (35, 39, 43) sts at each end, 31 (33, 35, 37) sts at the center for the back neck.
3. 3Left frontWith 3.5 mm needles cast on 43 (47, 53, 57) sts, work rib for 4 cm, then change to seed stitch on 4 mm. Place an armhole marker at the side edge at the same height as the back. At 37 (39, 41, 43) cm, bind off 6 (6, 7, 7) sts at the beginning of a WS row (neck edge). Bind off 2 sts at the beginning of the next WS row. Then dec 1 st at the neck edge on every RS row 4 (4, 5, 5) times. (31 (35, 39, 43) sts) At 44 (46, 48, 50) cm bind off the shoulder sts.
4. 4Right frontWork as for the left front, but work the neck bind-offs at the beginning of RS rows and the neck decreases at the end of RS rows. (31 (35, 39, 43) sts)
5. 5SleevesWith 3.5 mm needles cast on 45 (47, 49, 51) sts and work rib for 5 cm. Change to seed stitch on 4 mm and increase 1 st at each edge every 6th row 18 (19, 20, 21) times, working new sts into the pattern. (81 (85, 89, 93) sts) When the sleeve measures 42 (42, 43, 43) cm, bind off.
6. 6AssemblySew the shoulders. Match the center of each sleeve top to the shoulder seam and sew the sleeves between the markers (sleeve top 40 (42, 44, 46) cm, armhole depth 20 (21, 22, 23) cm). Sew the side and underarm seams.
7. 7Band and buttonholesWith the 3.5 mm circular and RS facing, start at the lower right front corner and pick up: 84 (89, 93, 97) sts along the right front, 22 (22, 24, 24) along the right neck slope, 33 (35, 37, 39) across the back neck, 22 (22, 24, 24) along the left neck slope and 84 (89, 93, 97) along the left front. (245 (257, 271, 281) sts) Work rows 1 and 2 in rib. Row 3 (buttonhole row, RS): work 3 sts in rib, *k2tog, yo, 13 (14, 12, 13) sts in rib* 5 (5, 6, 6) times, k2tog, yo, rib to end. (6 (6, 7, 7) buttonholes) Rows 4-7: rib, working the yarn overs into the pattern. Bind off in rib.
8. 8FinishingSew the buttons opposite the buttonholes. Weave in the ends. Soak the cardigan and dry it flat to measurements; seed stitch looks smooth and even after blocking.
