1. 1BackCast on 55 (61, 67, 73) sts. Every row: sl1 (with yarn in back), knit to end. Continue in this garter stitch until the piece measures 60 (62, 64, 66) cm. Bind off all sts loosely. (55 (61, 67, 73) sts)
2. 2FrontsCast on 24 (26, 29, 31) sts and work garter stitch as for the back, slipping the first stitch of every row. When the piece measures 60 (62, 64, 66) cm, bind off. Make a second identical front; garter stitch looks the same on both sides, so the left and right fronts are identical.
3. 3Shoulder seamsLay the back flat and place the fronts on top with the outer edges aligned. At each shoulder, starting from the outer edge, sew the bound-off edges together across 14 (15, 17, 18) sts (about 12 (12.5, 14, 15) cm). This leaves 27 (31, 33, 37) sts open at the center of the back for the neck; the inner 10 (11, 12, 13) sts of each front are not sewn and fold outwards as a collar.
4. 4Side seamsMeasure 38 (39, 40, 41) cm up from the hem along the side edges and mark. Sew the front and back together along the side up to this point; the remaining 22 (23, 24, 25) cm stays open as the armhole. The slipped edge stitches form a neat chain, so sew through these chains.
5. 5FinishingWeave in all ends inside the seams. Dampen the vest, lay it flat to measurements and leave it to dry. When wearing, fold the top inner corners of the fronts outwards for a natural shawl collar.
