1. 1Body (in the round)With the 4.5 mm circular cast on 208 (232, 256, 280) sts, join without twisting and place a beginning-of-round marker. Place a second side marker after 104 (116, 128, 140) sts. Work *k2, p2* rib in the round until the piece measures 36 (37, 38, 39) cm.
2. 2UnderarmsBind off 8 (10, 12, 14) sts at each side: 4 (5, 6, 7) sts on each side of both side markers. 96 (106, 116, 126) sts remain for the front and for the back. Place the back sts on a holder; continue the front back and forth in rows.
3. 3FrontKeeping the rib pattern (work sts as they appear on WS rows), dec 1 st at each edge on every RS row 4 (5, 6, 7) times. (88 (96, 104, 112) sts) When the armhole measures 13 (14, 14, 15) cm, shape the neck: work 32 (35, 38, 41) sts, bind off the center 24 (26, 28, 30) sts, work to end. Working each side separately, dec 1 st at the neck edge on every RS row 6 times. (26 (29, 32, 35) sts per shoulder) When the armhole measures 20 (21, 22, 23) cm, bind off the shoulder sts.
4. 4BackReturn the back sts to the needle and work the armhole decreases as for the front. (88 (96, 104, 112) sts) When the armhole measures 20 (21, 22, 23) cm: bind off 26 (29, 32, 35) sts, bind off the center 36 (38, 40, 42) sts, bind off the remaining 26 (29, 32, 35) sts.
5. 5Shoulder seamsJoin the front and back shoulders with a seam on the wrong side or a three-needle bind-off. Line up the rib columns as you sew.
6. 6NeckbandWith the 3.5 mm 40 cm circular, starting at the left shoulder, pick up 100 (104, 108, 112) sts around the neck. Work *k2, p2* rib for 3 cm and bind off loosely in rib.
7. 7Armhole bandsWith the 3.5 mm needle, starting at the center of the underarm, pick up 96 (100, 108, 116) sts around the armhole. Work *k2, p2* rib for 2.5 cm and bind off. Repeat for the second armhole.
8. 8FinishingWeave in the ends. Soak the vest, squeeze and dry flat to measurements without overstretching the rib.
