1. 1Lace pattern (multiple of 6 + 1)Worked over a multiple of 6 + 1 sts (excluding edge sts), repeating every 4 rows: Row 1 (RS): k1, *yo, ssk, k1, k2tog, yo, k1*. Row 2: purl. Row 3: k1, *k1, yo, sk2p, yo, k2*. Row 4: purl. The stitch count never changes: every yarn over is balanced by a decrease.
2. 2Front: hemWith 3.5 mm needles cast on 99 (111, 123, 135) sts and work 6 rows of garter stitch (knit every row). Change to 4 mm.
3. 3Front: bodyKnit the first and last st of every row (garter edge) and work the lace pattern over the 97 (109, 121, 133) sts in between; the pattern repeats 16 (18, 20, 22) times. When the piece measures 32 (33, 34, 35) cm, place an armhole marker at each edge and continue without shaping. At 50 (52, 54, 56) cm in total, end after row 2 or 4 of the pattern.
4. 4Front: boat-neck bandChange to 3.5 mm and work 6 rows of garter stitch over all sts. The piece now measures about 52 (54, 56, 58) cm. Bind off loosely. (99 (111, 123, 135) sts)
5. 5BackWork exactly as for the front; there is no difference between front and back in this design.
6. 6AssemblyPlace the pieces together with wrong sides out. At the shoulders, sew the garter band across 27 (33, 39, 45) sts from each outer edge; this leaves a 45-st (about 20 cm) boat-neck opening in the center. Sew the side edges from the hem up to the markers; 20 (21, 22, 23) cm stays open for the armholes. The garter edge sts form a neat border at the armholes on their own.
7. 7FinishingWeave the ends into the seams. Soak the top in lukewarm water, squeeze, lay flat to measurements and pin it out gently so the lace opens up while it dries.
