Crochet Puff Stitch Baby Blanket

1. 1FoundationCh 101. Row 1 (WS): sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across (100 sc). Making the chain with a hook half a size larger keeps the bottom edge from pulling in.
2. 2Puff rowRow 2 (RS): ch 2 (counts as first hdc), *puff in next st, ch 1, skip 1 st* 49 times, hdc in last st, turn (49 puffs; 100 sts). Pull up all loops of each puff to the same height so the puffs look full and even.
3. 3Single crochet rowRow 3 (WS): ch 1 (does not count), sc in first hdc, *sc in ch-1 space, sc in top of puff* 49 times, sc in top of turning chain, turn (100 sc). Find the real top of each puff, not the chain that closes it.
4. 4BodyRepeat rows 2 and 3; each puff lands right above the previous one, forming vertical columns of puffs. Continue until the blanket measures about 80 cm (about 72 rows in total), ending with an sc row. Check every 10 rows that you still have 100 sts.
5. 5BorderBorder round 1: without cutting the yarn, work 3 sc in the corner and continue around: 1 sc in every st along the top and bottom edges; along the sides 1 sc in every sc row and 2 sc in every puff row; 3 sc in each of the four corners. Join with sl st. Border rounds 2 and 3: ch 2 (does not count), hdc in every st, 3 hdc in each corner st; join with sl st.
6. 6FinishingCut the yarn and weave the ends at least 5 cm into the border. Wash by hand or on a gentle cycle and dry flat to size; do not iron, so the puffs are not flattened.
