Knitted Baby Boot Booties

1. 1LegCast on 32/36/40 sts. Work 2x2 rib by repeating *k2, p2* on every row; since the stitch count is a multiple of 4, the same row works on both sides. Continue until the leg measures 5/6/7 cm, ending with a wrong-side row. The leg gives the boot look and can be folded down once when worn.
2. 2Instep flapRS: k21/24/27, turn. WS: p10/12/14, turn. Now work only over the center 10/12/14 sts in stockinette (knit on RS, purl on WS); the 11/12/13 sts on each side wait on the needle. Work a total of 14/16/20 flap rows including the first WS row, ending with a WS row.
3. 3Picking up the sidesCut the yarn leaving 15 cm. With the RS facing, arrange the sts on the left needle so the right-hand 11/12/13 side sts are at the start of the row, and rejoin the yarn. K11/12/13, pick up and knit 9/11/13 sts along the right edge of the flap, k10/12/14 flap sts, pick up and knit 9/11/13 sts along the left edge of the flap, k the remaining 11/12/13 (50/58/66 sts).
4. 4Side wallsStarting with a WS row, work 8/10/12 rows in garter stitch (knit every row). The garter section forms the sides of the foot and the start of the sole, giving a firm, durable fabric.
5. 5Sole decreasesDecreases are worked at the heel ends and at the center of the toe; knit all WS rows in between. Decrease row 1 (RS): k1, ssk, k19/23/27, k2tog, k2, ssk, k19/23/27, k2tog, k1 (46/54/62 sts). Row 3: same, with k17/21/25 in the plain sections (42/50/58). Row 5: with k15/19/23 (38/46/54). Row 7: with k13/17/21 (34/42/50 sts).
6. 6Bind off and seamKnit one WS row and bind off all sts loosely, leaving a 50 cm tail. Fold the bootie in half with the wrong side out; use the long tail to sew the bound-off edge from toe to heel to close the sole. Then join the heel and the back edges of the leg with mattress stitch all the way up.
7. 7FinishingTurn the bootie right side out and weave the ends into the seams. Knit the second bootie the same way. Dampen lightly, stuff with a rolled towel to shape the boot and let dry flat.
