Crochet Earflap Baby Hat

Tap a section when you finish it.

1. 1Crown increasesEvery round starts with ch 2 (does not count) and is joined with sl st to the first st. Round 1: 10 hdc in a magic ring (10). Round 2: 2 hdc in each st (20). Round 3: *hdc, 2 hdc in next* (30). Round 4: *hdc 2, 2 hdc in next* (40). Round 5: *hdc 3, 2 hdc in next* (50). Round 6: *hdc 4, 2 hdc in next* (60). For 0-3 months the increases end here. 3-6 months, round 7: *hdc 11, 2 hdc in next* 5 times (65). 6-12 months, round 7: *hdc 5, 2 hdc in next* 10 times (70).
2. 2BodyContinue in hdc rounds without increasing (60/65/70). Work until the hat measures 12/13/14 cm from the top, measured down the side. Fasten off after the last round. The round join is the center back of the hat; mark it.
3. 3First earflapCount stitches from the round join and join yarn in st 10/10/11. Rows 1-4: ch 1 (does not count), sc 12/13/14, turn. Rows 5, 7, 9 and 11: ch 1, sc2tog, sc to last 2 sts, sc2tog (from 12/13/14 down to 4/5/6 sts). Rows 6, 8, 10: sc across. Row 12: for 0-3 months sc2tog twice (2); for 3-6 months sc2tog, sc 1, sc2tog (3); for 6-12 months sc2tog 3 times (3). Fasten off.
4. 4Second earflapJoin yarn in st 40/44/47 and work as for the first flap. The two flaps are then equally spaced from the center back: 18/18/20 sts are left without a flap at the back and 18/21/22 at the front.
5. 5EdgingEdging round 1: join yarn at center back, ch 1; sc around the hat edge and around the earflaps (1 sc per row along the flap sides, 3 sc at the flap tips); join with sl st. Edging round 2: ch 1, rev sc in each st; join with sl st. Crab stitch thickens the edge and stops it curling.
6. 6FinishingWeave all ends into the stitches on the inside. Dampen the hat lightly and let it dry over a round bowl, smoothing the flaps downward.
