The story of this dish
Fried fish and fried potatoes came together in 19th-century England. Battered fried fish is widely credited to Sephardic Jews who arrived from Portugal and Spain in the 16th and 17th centuries; fish fried on Friday could be eaten cold on the Sabbath.
Who first sold the two together is disputed. Traditional accounts name Joseph Malin in East London and John Lees in Lancashire among the first chip-shop owners in the 1860s.
