2. 2Tail stalkRnd 23: (2 sc, dec) x 6 (18) Stuff the body firmly. Rnd 24: (1 sc, dec) x 6 (12) Rnd 25: 12 sc (12) Rnd 26: (1 sc, dec) x 4 (8) Rnds 27-28: 8 sc (8) Stuff the stalk lightly, flatten the opening and close it with 4 sc worked through both layers (4). Leave a long tail before cutting, for sewing on the tail fins.
3. 3White bellyWith white, make an oval piece. Foundation: ch 8 Rnd 1: starting in the 2nd ch from hook, 6 sc, 3 sc in the last ch, 5 sc along the other side of the chain, 2 sc in the last st (16) Rnd 2: inc, 5 sc, inc x 3, 5 sc, inc x 2 (22) Sl st to finish and leave a long tail. Place the belly on the lower front of the body between rounds 3 and 15 and sew around its edge with close stitches.
4. 4Side fins and tail finsSide fins (make 2, blue): Rnd 1: 6 sc in MR (6) Rnd 2: (1 sc, inc) x 3 (9) Rnds 3-5: 9 sc (9) Tail fins (make 2, blue): Rnd 1: 6 sc in MR (6) Rnd 2: (1 sc, inc) x 3 (9) Rnd 3: (2 sc, inc) x 3 (12) Rnds 4-6: 12 sc (12) Do not stuff any of them; flatten and sew the openings closed.
5. 5Assembly and faceSew the side fins on either side of the belly at rounds 11-12, tips pointing back. Sew the two tail fins to the flat end of the tail stalk in a V shape, tips opening up and outward. If you didn't use safety eyes, embroider the eyes with black yarn in the same place; optionally add 2-3 stitch cheeks in pink below the eyes and a curved smile between them, just above the belly.
6. 6FinishingWeave all yarn ends through the body. For an optional water spout, sew 3 loops of ch 6 in white to the same point on top of the head; skip this for babies. The cotton whale can be washed at 30-40 °C.
