1. 1Knitting the squares (make 6)Knit one square in each color. Cast on 20 sts. Rows 1-40: k every row (garter stitch, 20 ridges) (20) Bind off loosely and leave a 50 cm tail for sewing. Each square should be about 12 x 12 cm; if not, add or remove 2 rows at a time before binding off.
2. 2Optional decorationBefore sewing, you can embroider simple shapes (a heart, circle, star or a big dot) in the center of some squares with contrast yarn, using chain stitch or satin stitch. Do not use buttons, beads or glued-on decorations. Weave the embroidery ends securely into the wrong side of the square.
3. 3Laying out the squaresArrange the squares in a cross shape: four squares in a vertical strip, and the remaining two to the right and left of the second square. Make sure the garter ridges run in the same (horizontal) direction on all squares. The stitches of one edge match the ridges of the other edge one to one: 20 stitches = 20 ridges.
4. 4SewingFirst sew the four squares of the vertical strip, then the two side squares, edge to edge along their adjoining sides from the right side (whip stitch or mattress stitch). Then fold the strip to form the cube and join the edges one by one, leaving three sides of the last square open. Pass the needle twice at the corners so no gaps remain.
5. 5StuffingStuff the cube with fiberfill bit by bit, filling the corners as well; it should be soft but full enough to hold its shape. If using a rattle insert, place it in the very center of the stuffing, surrounded by fiberfill on all sides. Sew the open edges of the last square closed.
6. 6FinishingWeave all yarn ends through a few stitches toward the inside of the cube. Squeeze and release the cube to shape the corners. The cotton cube can be washed at 40 °C; reshape after washing and dry flat.
