1. 1Stitch multiple and foundationBasketweave uses a multiple of 8 sts + 6: each repeat is a block of 4 FPdc + 4 BPdc, the extra 4 sts centre the pattern and there's one plain edge dc at each end. For the swatch, ch 24. Row 1 (WS): dc in 3rd ch from hook and in each ch across; the first 2 ch don't count. (22 dc)
2. 2Pattern rows (4-row repeat)Row 2 (RS): ch 2 (doesn't count), dc in first st, *FPdc around each of next 4 sts, BPdc around each of next 4 sts; rep from * 2 times, FPdc around each of next 4 sts, dc in last st. (22 sts) Row 3 (WS): ch 2, dc in first st, *4 BPdc, 4 FPdc; rep from * 2 times, 4 BPdc, dc in last st. Row 4 (RS): ch 2, dc in first st, *4 BPdc, 4 FPdc; rep from * 2 times, 4 BPdc, dc in last st. Row 5 (WS): ch 2, dc in first st, *4 FPdc, 4 BPdc; rep from * 2 times, 4 FPdc, dc in last st. Rows 2-5 form the repeat.
3. 3How the blocks workSeen from the RS, the same blocks stand out on rows 2 and 3; that's why FPdc and BPdc swap on row 3 when you work from the WS. On rows 4 and 5 the raised and sunken blocks trade places, giving the woven basket look. To know which post stitch to work, look at the post in front of you: if you're continuing the same block, work FPdc around a post that sticks out towards you.
4. 4Crochet the swatchAfter Row 1, repeat rows 2-5 three times, for 13 rows in total. The piece will measure about 16 cm and each block will be a square of about 2.8 x 2.5 cm. Count 22 sts on every row.
5. 5What to make with itBasketweave is so thick and warm that it's ideal for cushion covers, poufs, winter blankets and crochet baskets. For a 40 x 40 cm cushion front, start with 54 sts (a multiple of 8 + 6; ch 56, about 38.5 cm) and work 33 rows (Row 1 plus 8 repeats); allow about 250 g per side. Post stitches use about a third more yarn than plain dc.
6. 6FinishingAfter the last row, cut and pull the yarn through. Weave in the ends through the edge dc. Dampen the swatch, lay it flat and let it dry; don't iron it, or the texture will flatten.
