Crochet Puff Stitch Pattern

1. 1Stitch multiple and foundationPuff stitch uses a multiple of 2 sts + 2; the chain is one more than that. For the swatch, ch 21. Row 1: sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. (20 sc)
2. 2Learn the puffFor a puff, yarn over, insert the hook into the stitch and pull up a loop, then lengthen it to about the height of an hdc. Do this 3 times into the same stitch, giving 7 loops on the hook. Yarn over once more and draw through all 7 loops. Keeping the loops the same length makes a full, neat puff.
3. 3Pattern rows (4-row repeat)Row 2 (RS): ch 2 (doesn't count), turn, hdc in first st, *puff in next st, ch 1, skip 1 st; rep from * 9 times, hdc in last st. (9 puffs, 9 ch, 2 hdc = 20 sts) Row 3: ch 1, turn, sc in each st and each ch-1 sp across. (20 sc) Row 4 (RS): ch 2 (doesn't count), turn, hdc in each of first 2 sts, *puff in next st, ch 1, skip 1 st; rep from * 8 times, hdc in each of last 2 sts. (8 puffs, 20 sts) Row 5: as Row 3. Rows 2-5 form the repeat; the puffs shift by one stitch on each RS row.
4. 4Crochet the swatchAfter Row 1, work rows 2-5 four times, then rows 2 and 3 once more, for 19 rows in total. The piece will measure about 13.5 cm. On the sc rows, don't skip the ch-1 space after each puff, or your stitch count will drop.
5. 5What to make with itPuff texture is very soft and warm for hats, cowls, baby blankets and winter cushions. For a cowl, start with 36 sts (a multiple of 2 + 2; ch 37, about 26 cm), work to 60 cm and join the short ends; you'll need about 250 g.
6. 6FinishingAfter the last sc row, cut and pull the yarn through. Weave in the ends through the sc. Dampen the swatch without stretching it and let it dry; don't iron it, or the puffs will flatten.
