Crochet Popcorn Stitch Pattern

1. 1Stitch multiple and foundationPopcorn stitch uses a multiple of 4 sts + 3; the chain is 2 more than that. For the swatch, ch 21. Row 1 (WS): dc in 4th ch from hook and in each ch across; the 3 skipped ch count as a dc. (19 dc)
2. 2Learn the popcornWork 5 dc into the same stitch. Carefully take the hook out of the last loop and leave it. Insert the hook from front to back into the top of the first dc of the group, catch the dropped loop and pull it through the first dc. The 5 dc close towards you into a round bump. Because you insert the hook from front to back, the popcorn always pops to the side facing you, which is the RS.
3. 3Pattern rows (4-row repeat)Row 2 (RS): ch 3 (counts as dc), turn, dc in each of next 2 sts, *pc in next st, dc in each of next 3 sts; rep from * 4 times. (4 pc, 19 sts) Row 3 (WS): ch 3 (counts as dc), turn, dc in each st across (1 dc in the closing loop of each pc), working the last dc in the top of the turning chain. (19 dc) Row 4 (RS): ch 3, turn, dc in each of next 4 sts, *pc in next st, dc in each of next 3 sts; rep from * 3 times, dc in each of last 2 sts. (3 pc, 19 sts) Row 5: as Row 3. Rows 2-5 form the repeat; the popcorns on row 4 sit exactly between those on row 2.
4. 4Crochet the swatchAfter Row 1, repeat rows 2-5 twice, for 9 rows in total. The piece will measure about 13 cm. On WS rows, look for the little closing loop to find the top of each popcorn; if you skip it, your stitch count will drop.
5. 5What to make with itPopcorn texture is great fun on cushion covers, bags, baskets and children's blankets. For a 40 x 40 cm cushion front, start with 55 sts (a multiple of 4 + 3; ch 57, about 39 cm) and work 29 rows (ending with a WS row); you'll need about 220 g. For small baby items, work the popcorns tightly so they can't be pulled open.
6. 6FinishingAfter the last WS row, cut and pull the yarn through. Weave in the ends through the dc; running them behind the popcorns hides them completely. Dampen the swatch, let it dry, and don't iron it so the popcorns stay plump.
