1. 1Stitch multiple and cast onThis chevron lace uses a multiple of 12 sts + 1, plus one edge stitch each side, i.e. a multiple of 12 + 3. For the swatch, cast on 39 sts (12 x 3 + 3) with 3.5 mm needles. First knit 2 rows (garter).
2. 2Pattern rows (4-row repeat)Row 1 (RS): k2, *yo, k4, s2kp, k4, yo, k1; rep from * 3 times, k1. (39 sts) Row 2 (WS): k1, purl to last st, k1. Row 3: as Row 1. Row 4 (WS): knit. The knit row on row 4 leaves a thin garter ridge on the RS that highlights the chevrons.
3. 3How the chevron formsIn each repeat the two yarn overs make the peaks and the centred decrease makes the valleys; because they're repeated at the same points on every RS row, the stitches are pulled into V shapes. That's why the lower edge scallops on its own. Keep the yarn overs and decreases stacked vertically over the same stitches.
4. 4Knit the swatchRepeat rows 1-4 ten times (40 rows). With the first 2 garter rows that's 42 rows in total, and the piece measures about 14 cm after blocking. Check that you have 39 sts at the end of every row 1 and 3.
5. 5What to make with itChevron lace is lovely for baby blankets, summer scarves and the skirt of a girl's dress; 4-row stripes in two colours make the zigzags pop even more. For a baby blanket, cast on 147 sts (12 x 12 + 3; about 61 cm) and work to 75 cm; you'll need about 300 g. For a scarf, 51 sts (12 x 4 + 3; about 21 cm) is enough.
6. 6FinishingAfter row 4 of the last repeat, bind off loosely knitwise on the RS; the top edge stays straight and the lower edge scalloped. Weave the ends into the edge stitches. Soak the swatch, lay it out, pin each point along the lower edge to define the scallops, and let it dry.
