Crochet Moss Stitch Pattern (Linen Stitch)

1. 1Stitch multiple and foundationMoss stitch starts on a multiple of 2 ch (an even number). For the swatch, ch 26. In this pattern the sc and the chains each count as a stitch, giving 25 sts per row.
2. 2Row 1Sc in 2nd ch from hook, *ch 1, skip 1 ch, sc in next ch; rep from * 12 times. (13 sc, 12 ch = 25 sts)
3. 3Pattern rows (2-row repeat)Row 2: ch 1, turn, sc in first sc, sc in first ch-1 sp, *ch 1, sc in next ch-1 sp; rep from * 11 times, sc in last sc. (14 sc, 11 ch = 25 sts) Row 3: ch 1, turn, sc in first sc, *ch 1, skip 1 sc, sc in next ch-1 sp; rep from * 11 times, ch 1, skip 1 sc, sc in last sc. (13 sc, 12 ch = 25 sts) Rows 2 and 3 form the repeat. The rule is simple: sc go into chain spaces and chains sit over sc.
4. 4Crochet the swatchAfter Row 1, work rows 2-3 fifteen times, then Row 2 once more, for 32 rows in total. The piece will measure about 13 cm. With 2-row stripes in two colours the texture looks like tiny bricks and is very smart.
5. 5What to make with itBecause moss stitch is dense and doesn't curl, it's perfect for scarves, bags, coasters, dishcloths and light blankets. For a scarf, ch 50 (an even number; 49 sts, about 24.5 cm) and work to 170 cm; you'll need about 300 g. For a striped scarf, change colour every 2 rows.
6. 6FinishingAfter the last row, cut and pull the yarn through. Weave the ends in through the sc; in striped pieces hide each colour in its own row. Dampen the swatch, lay it out to 12.5 x 13 cm and let it dry; moss stitch flattens like woven fabric after blocking.
