1. 1Stitch multiple and cast onThis basketweave uses a multiple of 8 sts + 5; each repeat is 5 purl + 3 knit, and the final 5 sts balance the pattern on both sides. For the swatch, cast on 29 sts (8 x 3 + 5) with 5 mm needles. Both edges end in purl texture, so no separate edge stitches are needed.
2. 2Pattern rows (8-row repeat)Row 1 (RS): knit. (29 sts) Row 2 (WS): k5, *p3, k5; rep from * to end. Row 3: p5, *k3, p5; rep from * to end. Row 4: as Row 2. Row 5: knit. Row 6: k1, *p3, k5; rep from * to last 4 sts, p3, k1. Row 7: p1, *k3, p5; rep from * to last 4 sts, k3, p1. Row 8: as Row 6.
3. 3How the texture formsOn rows 2-4 small knit blocks, 3 sts wide and 3 rows high, sit inside the purl background. The full knit row on row 5 separates them, and on rows 6-8 the blocks shift by 4 sts to sit exactly between two blocks below. The result looks like woven straw or a brick wall.
4. 4Knit the swatchRepeat rows 1-8 five times (40 rows), then work Row 1 once more (41 rows). The piece will measure about 13.5 cm. The stitch count is 29 throughout.
5. 5What to make with itBasketweave is great for baby blankets, pouf covers and knitted baskets, as it's thick and lies flat. For a baby blanket, cast on 125 sts with the same yarn (8 x 15 + 5; about 62 cm) and work to 80 cm; you'll need about 400 g. Add 4 garter edge sts at each side if you like.
6. 6FinishingBind off knitwise as you work the last row (row 41). Weave in the ends through the purl stitches. Dampen the swatch, lay it out to 14.5 x 13.5 cm and let it dry.
