Crochet Ripple (Chevron) Pattern

1. 1Stitch multiple and foundationThis ripple uses a multiple of 10 sts + 1; the chain is 2 more than that. Each 10-st repeat has one peak (3 dc in one st) and one valley (dc3tog). For the swatch, ch 23 with colour A (10 x 2 + 1 + 2).
2. 2Row 1Dc2tog over the 3rd and 4th ch from hook (the first 2 ch don't count), dc in each of next 3 ch, 3 dc in next ch, dc in each of next 3 ch, *dc3tog over next 3 ch, dc in each of next 3 ch, 3 dc in next ch, dc in each of next 3 ch; work from * once, dc2tog over last 2 ch. (21 sts)
3. 3Pattern row (1-row repeat)Row 2: ch 2 (doesn't count), turn, dc2tog over first 2 sts, dc in each of next 3 sts, 3 dc in next st (the centre of the 3 dc at the peak), dc in each of next 3 sts, *dc3tog over next 3 sts (the centre one is the bottom of the valley), dc in each of next 3 sts, 3 dc in next st, dc in each of next 3 sts; work from * once, dc2tog over last 2 sts. (21 sts) Row 3 and all following rows: as Row 2. Each row increases 2 sts and decreases 2 sts, so the total stays the same.
4. 4Colour stripesWork two rows in colour A and two rows in colour B. To change colour, draw the last two loops of the final dc through with the new colour so the next row starts cleanly. Don't cut the unused colour; carry it up the side, which works neatly with 2-row stripes.
5. 5Crochet the swatchWork 12 rows in total (3 full colour repeats of A, A, B, B). The piece will measure about 15 cm. Count 21 sts on every row and check that the peaks and valleys stack up.
6. 6What to make with itRipple is a classic for colourful blankets, baby blankets and cushion covers. For a 75 x 100 cm blanket, start with 111 sts (a multiple of 10 + 1; ch 113, 11 waves) and work to 100 cm; you'll need about 750 g in total, split between your colours. The ends stay wavy; if you like, work a round of sc that follows the waves along the top and bottom.
7. 7FinishingAfter the last row, cut and pull the yarn through. Weave each colour's ends into its own colour. Dampen the swatch, lay it out, pin the peaks and valleys to define the waves, and let it dry.
