Crochet Crossed Double Crochet Pattern

1. 1Stitch multiple and foundationCrossed dc uses a multiple of 2 sts + 2: each cross uses 2 sts and one plain edge dc sits at each end. The chain is 2 more than the stitch count; for the swatch, ch 26. Row 1: dc in 4th ch from hook and in each ch across; the 3 skipped ch count as a dc. (24 dc)
2. 2Learn the crossSkip one stitch and work a normal dc in the next. Now bring the hook back in front of the new dc, insert it into the skipped stitch and work the second dc; it passes in front of the first and covers it, forming a small X. Pull the loops up a little longer on the second dc so you don't squash the first one.
3. 3Pattern row (1-row repeat)Row 2: ch 3 (counts as dc), turn, *Xdc (skip 1 st, dc in next st, dc in skipped st working in front of the dc just made); rep from * 11 times, dc in top of the turning chain. (11 crosses + 2 edge dc = 24 sts) Row 3 and all following rows: as Row 2. The crosses stack up row by row and form a column texture that looks almost woven.
4. 4Crochet the swatchWork Row 2 eleven times, for 12 rows in total; the piece will measure about 13.5 cm. Count 24 sts on every row: turning chain + 11 crosses + last dc. Working the last dc into the top of the turning chain keeps the edge straight.
5. 5What to make with itCrossed dc is a lovely texture for scarves, bags, baskets and cardigan bodies, and it leaves fewer gaps than plain dc. For a scarf, start with 36 sts (a multiple of 2 + 2; ch 38, about 20 cm) and work to 160 cm; you'll need about 250 g. For a bolder texture, add a row of sc between the crossed rows.
6. 6FinishingAfter the last row, cut and pull the yarn through. Weave in the ends through the edge dc. Dampen the swatch, lay it out to 13.5 x 13.5 cm and let it dry.
