Crochet Granny Square Pattern

1. 1How it works and getting startedA granny square is worked in rounds, not rows, always from the RS without turning. Each round grows by two clusters at each corner and one cluster in each ch-1 space along the sides, so round n has 4 x n clusters. Start with a magic ring.
2. 2Round 1Into the ring: ch 3 (counts as dc), 2 dc, ch 2, *3 dc, ch 2; rep from * 3 times, join with a sl st to the top of the ch-3. Pull the tail to close the ring. (4 clusters = 12 dc, 4 corner spaces)
3. 3Round 2Sl st in each of the next 2 dc and into the corner space. Ch 3 (counts as dc), 2 dc in the same space, ch 2, 3 dc (first corner), *ch 1, (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in the next corner space; rep from * 3 times, ch 1, sl st to the top of the ch-3. (8 clusters = 24 dc)
4. 4Round 3 and the repeatRound 3: sl st in each of next 2 dc and into the corner space. Ch 3, 2 dc in the same space, ch 2, 3 dc, *ch 1, 3 dc in the next ch-1 sp, ch 1, (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in the next corner; rep from * 3 times, ch 1, 3 dc in the last ch-1 sp, ch 1, join with a sl st. (12 clusters = 36 dc) Round 4: the same way, with one cluster in each of the two ch-1 spaces on each side. (16 clusters = 48 dc) Round 5: one cluster in each of the three ch-1 spaces on each side. (20 clusters = 60 dc) The rule: (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in corners, 3 dc in side spaces, ch 1 between every cluster.
5. 5Changing coloursTo work each round in a different colour, cut the yarn after joining the round. Join the new colour with a sl st in a corner space and work the round the same way, starting with ch 3. With this method you don't need to slip stitch over to the corner at the start of the round.
6. 6What to make with itGranny squares are joined into blankets, cushions, bags and vests. A 6 x 8 layout of 48 squares makes a blanket of about 78 x 104 cm; at about 15 g per square plus 80 g for joining and the border, you'll need about 800 g in total. Nine squares (3 x 3) make a cushion front of about 39 x 39 cm. Place squares wrong sides together and join them with sc or sl st.
7. 7FinishingAfter joining the last round, cut the yarn leaving 15 cm and pull it through. Weave the ends into dc of the same colour; in multicoloured squares hide each colour's ends in its own round. Before joining, dampen the squares and lay them out to 13 x 13 cm to dry; even squares make joining much easier.
